As part of our #SmartHealthSystems<\/a> study which examines the digital transformation of healthcare systems in 17 countries, we have visited five of these countries to take a closer look at what they have achieved. In each country, we have explored the political, cultural, technological and economic factors driving success as well the obstacles to advancing digitization strategies in healthcare. The findings of our cross-national study will be published in November 2018. Until then, we will be highlighting thought-provoking insights and best practices from other countries here in our blog.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the Netherlands, patients can opt-in to a system of electronic data exchange in the healthcare system \u2013 and hence profit from an e-health infrastructure that is considerably well developed.\u00a0Dr. Lies van Gennip, Director of NICTIZ, tells us in a Skype-interview how the Dutch system is designed and what experiences the country has made so far.\u00a0She emphasizes the importance of placing the patient at the centre of the system and predicts a change in the reality of care towards more online contact and the home as the hub of health care.
